12:53 am - Garden photos
I took a few spring pictures in my garden. I like the macro feature on my new camera, but I can't find how to focus manually, which means many of these close-ups aren't as good as they could be. Anyway, these leaves don't look too bad:

2:42 pm - XHTML: just say no
Skim assist category: tech yawn

I could never see the advantage of XHTML but I thought this was my fault. Seems I may be right. Plain old HTML for me, then.

Sadly the reason I was reading about this was because I wanted to imitate <marquee> with CSS, for which I apologise.

What <marquee> does is make text slide - it's annoying and non-standard, but the text slides!

12:18 am - Too much music
I got an invite to spotify. I'm only three songs in, but it seems like a marvellous idea. I can listen to pretty much anything I want. Now what do I want?

Hmm - no spotify detection in semagic...

http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/02/carnival.html

It's from The Big Picture - an excellent compilation of news agency photos, done by someone at the Boston Globe. It's available on LJ at bigpicbostglobe but beware if your friends page is broken by large pictures. Better still, fix your friends page!

8:49 pm - Drinks
Who has end-of-quarter drinks on Feb 4th? My company does. So I helped them out with the drinking. It's the least I could do.

6:13 pm - ...but there is a prize for all those we show
Bad news: Tony Hart died.
Good news: if you ever saw Vision On or Take Hart you'll enjoy this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7837997.stm

If you didn't, you'll be puzzled by the cheesy music. You had to be there.

12:26 am - Yesterday's band
On the front page of the Bittersweets' site you can see the crowd from the musicians' POV. We were to the right of the white pillar (i.e. out of the picture).

Hey, cynnerth, isn't that Michael on left? 8~)

Now here's what we could see of them:

And here's me and Stacey, the receptionist from work - her boyfriend took it.

The last act was the Bittersweets, who were lovely. I'm made up. Time to go home.

4:45 pm - Here's a sad thing
At one time I new the names of most people who worked for LJ, but today I looked at the staff list for LJ and I've only heard of one person.

This site is definitely not what it used to be. Posts in lj_dev receive little or no feedback. Staff are laid off to "allow the company to build a stronger business model" when LJ got by for years without being a business at all. The new profile page annoyed huge numbers of people. There's no free ad-less account type for communities.

I was hoping to move to dreamwidth, but (understandably enough) not much has happened there. Other choices include deadjournal and insanejournal, but I'm unsure about the overtones and connotations.

Ho hum.

Video...
Guess who got a new camera for Christmas and took it skating?

I'm experimenting with ScrapBook and video, and the video link above may or may not work for you. My QuickTime plugin starts playing it but then it goes blank. Ho hum. I wonder if I can get my camera to output a non-Microsoft video format? A work-round may to right-click the link and save - worked for me, but it's a lot of effort to go to just to see a tiny clip of some people skating.

Edit: Hmm, sort of success:

12:41 pm - A well known saying
I'm trying to fix some data. Now I have two problems.

Here's a curious thing. If you don't know what I'm talking about, following that link is unlikely to help much. But if you do know what I'm talking about, you needn't click (though you might enjoy the background info there).

Edit: both problems were easily solved once I'd noticed the obvious mistake.
